Gas logs causing damage to drywall?
Our home has gas logs in the livingroom (which has VERY tall ceilings). Apparently the heat from the logs has caused damage to the drywall in that the drywall tape is lifting and in some areas "ribboning" near the fireplace. I have been told that we must not have the fan engaged but these logs do not have a fan mechanism. Any ideas? Forgot to mention that we do have a ceiling fan in the room and that the heat travels to the upstairs as it is open to the livingroom.

If you have high ceilings, you need a ceiling fan. At least get a floor fan and put it in one corner and point it straight up. The hot air that gets trapped up there is very dry. The heat is being wasted also.

This may also be an insulation problem. If you have warm air on one side of the dry wall and cold on the other condensation will form and swell the dry wall and loosen the tape.

I am assuming you have invented gas logs. If so the problem is from moisture caused by the logs as a by product. It equals about a pint of water per 10,000 BTU an hour which if used alot can amount to a large amount of moisture in a room. In your owners manual it states to crack a window an inch or 2 for proper operation while in use. That would likely help. As for as the fans go turn it to reverse low for the best heat distribution. Another side effect of unvented products is they will also discolor the walls after alot of use especially if therre is a smoker in the home.
