I am having a roof installed on my house. A competiting roofer claims that I have to have fire retardent wood
Is this just a gimmick to win business or do most building codes actually require its installation? Everything I find online talks how quickly it degrades and recommends other materials. Is this just a gimmick, or did my first roofer omit the quote?

Here that would be BS I've never heard this before. Unless you live in a fire prone area in which case it may be required by code. Check with the county zoning or whatever and find the code. Asphalt shingles burn without fire retardant wood so I think it wouldn't matter if you used those anyway

Before you decide on a roofer make sure they are licensed..even though they may ahve a truck with a noame on it some people still run a business without being licensed. Yes...some if not most codes require fire retardent roofing...you would have to contact the code inspector for your area to verify. If your're wanting a roof that lasts you may want to consider paying more for tile or other material.

Never heard of fire retardant wood before. I'd bet your competing roofer is feeding you a line. You should be able to check codes fairly easilly through your local building inspector. If you're in a city, call the city offices, if in the country call your local township supervisor.

Sounds like you need a second opinion. call another roofer in the phone book with a contractors license number listed in the ad. Have them give you another estimate, it should at least give you an opportunity to get some questions answered. good luck

Ask the guy to show you a copy of the "code" that states this. If he won't, turn him in to the B.B.B. and let him know you're going to do it! If he does, ask him to put his bid price on the back, and sign it. Then take it to the city (county) that the code is for. Ask them if it is true. If not, turn him in... You've got his signature.... If it is, well..... at least you've got a bid....

Could he mean that if the roof is of wood that is exposed that it has to be fire retardant?

Do you live beside an active volcano or have dragons in your area ? If you answer no, then be very wary of this person. All wood is flammable. If fire was an issue, your code would spec only non flammable materials, like metal or tile, and likely no wood structures, at all... no, that roofer is telling you lies.
