fire rated wall questions?
the city says i need to make one of my addition walls 1hr fire rated. they told me to put double layers of type x gypsum sheathing on the interior and exterior. are they correct on the double layer? i tried to double-check on the code, but it does not say anything about double layers. did i hear them right? also, what is exterior gypsum sheathing? not the same stuff as interior drywall, is it? or is there a water resistant version specifically for exterior application? thanks.

One layer of 5/8" gypsum wall board each side of metal or wood studs equals a one hour fire rated wall. There is a special gyp sheathing made for exterior use.

i think that 2 layers of 5\8" fire rated drywall equals 1 hour fire wall, with the joints overlapping

They do make a extior sheetrock i have never use it. they do make a 5/8" thich fire proof sheetrock i have use alot. I think that would work better.30 years experience builder. This is the best answer!

1 layer of 5/8 = 30 min. fire rating. So, one layer on each side of a wall or 2 layers on one side equals one hr.

Your 5/8" drywall is usually type x. You can buy it at any home store. Make sure it says X or fire rated on it or you won't get passed. You can use one layer of tape and mud for "fire taping" If the inspector wants two layers do two layers.

It seems the city is asking for a 2-hour rated firewall. Where there is a single row of studs, this takes two layers of Type X gypsum board. It must be applied in accordance with thee Underwriters Laboratories listings for a 2-hour wall. This involves proper mounting, taping, etc.
