What is the best way to repair torn sheetrock?
My husband and I have been stripping wallpaper and some of it had so much glue that it pulled off part of the paper covering the sheetrock. Should we just spackle and sand it or is there a better way to get a smooth surface? Thanks to all who answer!

Prime the surface, then skimcoat it with lightweight joint compound. Let it dry, sand, then prime the whole wall. You should be good to go.

Spackle or thinned joint coumpound is the standard method of repairing torn paper unless you want to use texture paint over the entire wall.

Been there done that. If 30% or more of the surface is torn. I suggest starting from scratch. Remove the old sheet rock and put up new or if you don't mind it put up a thin sheet overtop the old, that works too. In our front hall we spackled and sanded, four times... It's a tiny space but it took months to get it just right. Twice we painted thinking the surface was good enough only to be unhappy with the results and painted mud no longer sands. In our kitchen they forgot to prime the wall before putting up wall paper. We ended up re-wall papering because the damage was so bad. Part of the wall was over stair well in an area of the house where constant access is required. All sorts of tricky scaffolding would have been required. If you do decide to spackle. Don't spare the mud and get the biggest tools you can reasonably handle.
