| Does backer board have to be replaced when re tiling a bathroom? I'm retiling my bathroom. I'm removing the old tile and I'm able to do it without completly destroying the back board underneath. Do I have to replace the old backer board or can I just lay the tile on the old backerboard? Thin set must be smooth , you can actually add a skim coat to make it all smooth if need be. Any questions you can e mail me thru my avatar PS I m assuming you have a cement backer board, if not properly add a cement board if you have a trim available to do it that way. ( A 4200 or an A106 type trim) If it is a drywall, do your self a favor and cut it out and redo w/ a cement board GL All Answers Answer 1 no you don't have to remove old board u will be fine to spread the adhesive level and stick tile on 2008-12-29 09:41:23 Answer 2 I personally would replace it to make sure it's flat and also make sure it water resistant type and not regular drywall. 2008-12-29 09:42:03 Answer 3 You can reuse it if your able to get it smooth enough to except tile and be lumpy.
